Christmas meme

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? We've used both (and recycled both!). Over the years we have wrapped a number of boxes with tops. We wrap the bottom and tops separately so that they can be used over & over. THIS YEAR we have started a new tradition (I am so excited!). My son and I have made fabric bags of all sizes. Hopefully they will be used for many happy years yet to come!

2. Real tree or artificial? Real tree! This year I am pushing for a live tree (as opposed to cut). We would have to go much smaller tree (due to $$).

3. When do you put up the tree? Anywhere from a couple of weeks before Christmas to a couple of days before.

4. When do you take the tree down? Usually New Year's Day because it gets too dry to be safe. We would like to leave it up until January 6th.

5. Do you like eggnog? Only a sip or two.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? I have to mention two.
1) A Hummel figurine from my Mom. 2) A guitar from my Mom and Dad.

note added 12-25-07
My husband gave me a beautiful study Bible and carrying case along with pencil highlighters this Christmas. It definitely ranks up there with favorites!

7. Do you have a Nativity scene? Yes, and we take our little baby Jesus figurine to the Bless Baby Jesus Mass each year.

8. Hardest person to buy for? My mother-in-law, hands down!

9. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Big "bear claw" bedroom slippers that were @ least 2 sizes too big for me (from the person I was very much in love with when I was younger). To add insult to injury - they were handed to me unwrapped and had been given to him for Christmas but did not fit him.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail! But my list of over 100 has dwindled to ~45 because of postage rates. We do a lot of calling now!

11. Favorite Christmas Movie? It's a Wonderful Life, followed (@ quite a distance BTW) by White Christmas. On the corny side I kind of like (the first) The Santa Clause movie and Elf.

12. When do you start shopping for Christmas? I find things throughout the year and tuck them away.

13. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes, many times. If I get something I don't need or like I keep it in the package. I give it to someone that I think might need or like it. I hope everyone does this!

14. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? I like the ALL the traditional things -- turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, salad, peas, yams, homemade bread, pie

15. Clear lights or colored on the tree? We have decorated in both styles. Like 'em both! My kids want multicolored lights this year so that's what we'll do!

16. Favorite Christmas song. Angels We Have Heard on High and Hark, the Herald Angels Sing

17. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay home!

18. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer. Absolutely!

19. Angel on the tree top or a Star? We change our tree topper almost every year. Many of our trees haven't had the right shape for a tree topping ornament! :-).

20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We prefer Christmas morning! But we do open gifts on Christmas Eve if someone is traveling and can't be in 2 places at once on Christmas Day.

21. Most annoying thing about this time of year? Annoying?
Hmmm, hard one. OK, I have it! Not enough time off from school!!! When I taught at University we had nearly 3 weeks. THAT was great!

All the predictable annoyances don't really bother me.
  • I don't go to malls or shop so that whole scene doesn't bother me.
  • Mass being SUPER crowded is a sign that some people are @ LEAST getting to Mass!
  • The whole change to "Happy Holidays" is more than a mere annoyance. It is a sad state of our culture. Somehow I believe that people do not know that the word Holiday is actually a way of saying "Holy Days."
  • Busy Post Offices do not bother me because we do not mail that much.
